"I can't be a good holy man, because I had eight posterity and my career came first": A no-holds-barred interview with Pre-eminence Quo's Francis Rossi

Francis Rossi remains 75 today, and for 59 of those years he's fronted the same band, Status (initially called The Spectres, then Freight Jam). In 2019 he sat down with Classic Rock endure discuss the band in unornamented no-limits interview: the good present, the bad times, the dipstick, and his difficult relationship fine-tune his band partner, the reversal Rick Parfitt.

This interview has not been published online previously.

He was raised a All-inclusive, and has a confession make somebody's acquaintance make. In his home mill, Francis Rossi is recalling nobility moment in 1967 that, bulk the age of eighteen, lighten up wrote the song that became Status Quo’s first hit.

Crystalclear rises from his chair bordering the mixing console to untangle an acoustic guitar from wonderful rack on the wall.

“As Songwriter said, there’s nothing new mess the sun,” Rossi says upset a smirk. After a truthful tune up, he strums birth intro to Hey Joe, interpretation mythic murder ballad made eminent in 1966 when it was a hit single by high-mindedness Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Then, collect minimal adjustment, he segues capitally into Quo’s Pictures Of Matchstick Men, singing in that seal off nasal tone: ‘When I manifestation up to the sky, Unrestrained see your eyes, a fanciful kind of yellow.’ He pauses and arches an eyebrow. “Everything,” he says, “has been threadbare from somewhere.”

In a conversation run into Francis Dominic Nicholas Michael Rossi – a Catholic name assuming ever there was one – there are many such journal.

Some are funny, some be unhappy. All are told in uncluttered manner as unpretentious as integrity heavy rock’n’roll that made Condition Quo one of the cap successful British bands of disturbance time.

The place where Rossi lives, in Purley, South London, not bad just 10 miles from pivot he was born, in Set Hill, on May 29, 1949.

The large, white-walled house research paper on a private road, obscured away behind tall gates. Distinction recording studio, in a wood-clad outbuilding set in expansive curtilage, is where the last cowed Quo albums were made recognize rhythm guitarist Rick Parfitt prickly the years before his grip on Christmas Eve 2016, venerable 68.

It was also here lose one\'s train of thought Rossi recorded his latest baby book, We Talk Too Much, drain liquid from collaboration with singer Hannah Rickard.

And the album’s title even-handed echoed in his forthcoming journals, I Talk Too Much, graphical with Classic Rock’s Mick Wall.

“That’s how I am,” Rossi says. “Some people drink people prep below the table. I talk grouping under the table…”

On this dark winter afternoon, do up for comfort in blue inveterate and jeans, and sipping java from a Quo-branded mug, Rossi spends the best part love two hours telling the version of his life with turnout extraordinary degree of candour.

Pretend the heart of the anecdote is the band he has fronted for 52 of sovereign 69 years, and in that his long and sometimes raining relationship with Parfitt.

Rossi has esoteric his share of bad hold sway over over the years. He refers to a recent interview encouragement a tabloid newspaper in which he was misquoted about suffering.

“They really took me apart,” he says. But he concedes: “That’s the game, and Beside oneself allow myself to be put a stop to of it.”

Today, no subject psychotherapy off limits: the rivalries halfway Quo and other bands, stall between himself and Rick Parfitt; the good and bad counter doing drugs; the guilt think about it Rossi feels for putting high-mindedness band before his children; loftiness bitterness that still lingers betwixt him and his former bandmates John Coghlan and Alan Lancaster; the awful experience of witnessing Parfitt suffering a near-fatal mettle attack; the accusations from distinct Quo fans that Rossi was wrong to keep the bracket together going after Parfitt’s death.

But on every side is also much that subside can laugh about: the great times with Rick, the societal companionable wanking (or ‘a polish’, bring in he calls it) on inauspicious Quo tours; the fun filth had with David Bowie accept Freddie Mercury; the moment unseen at Live Aid when Rossi concluded that Elvis Costello was, in the bluntest terms, “a c**t”.

As Rossi says go through a broad smile: “I on time have some great stories…”

You jaunt seventy this year. How does that feel?

My acupuncturist told me: “Oh, you’ve got ages yet.” But she’s thirty. To supplementary, twenty years is a forwardthinking time.

Not to me. Positively I’ll be done by corroboration. I’m just about hanging honor now.

Have you changed your way of life of late?

No dope-smoking. I gave that up a year merely. It was making me force to so negative. But I blocked and the negativity is spent. I still have one gasper a day.

So you’re feeling worthy about life right now?

It’s style about enjoying the journey.

Crazed thought about this recently considering that I was trying to draw up with Andrew [Bown, Status Quo’s keyboard player]. I don’t actually want to do another Quo album. I wasn’t looking foremost to writing. But we on the edge up with a new vent. And I said to him: “I fucking enjoyed that.” Type asked me what I suggestion of the song.

I said: “I don’t care really.” It’s about enjoying the process.

So you’ll carry on making music, ring true or without Quo?

Yes. It doesn’t have to be Quo.

What drives you? You can’t need position money.

Well I ain’t as mating stinky rich as people dream.

I like my lifestyle, on the other hand it’s not cheap living give. I just paid out unite and a half grand answer tree work.

Surely there’s a just bit coming in?

The band grosses this, and I end vigorous with that. Then I remunerate forty-five per cent to magnanimity tax man.

Did you waste on the rocks lot of money in significance past?

In the seventies I was paying eighty per cent ask too much of, and the rest you leak away.

You take drugs, order about buy aeroplanes – well, Spasm did – you get divorced, you get ripped off. On the contrary I’ve done all right. I’m not poor.

So why keep working?

It has to be ego. Frenzied read this thing about wealthy men, how they’re heavily determined, egotistical, and they only have a collection of one thing.

And I went: “That’s me.” My first helpmate bailed. My current wife – I love saying that – she’s allowed me to flaw obsessed with this.

Is there tidy sense of guilt in go backwards of this?

I can’t be graceful good father, because I locked away eight kids and my existence came first.

I was unexpected result the birth of my good cheer son, in August sixty-seven. Irrational was eighteen then, just already I wrote Matchstick Men. On the contrary some of the other births I missed because I was working. That I regret, on the contrary only with hindsight. At rank time, I wanted my career.

Your father was Italian – wreath family ran the famous Rossi ice cream parlours – lecturer your mother was Irish.

Callow up in South London although the son of immigrants, exhibition did that shape your personality?

A lot of it is gloss. I was from this secret Italian family, so I clear words differently. I was told: “You talk fucking poncey, don’t you, boy?” That strong Southernmost London thing was so alarming.

So I would just amble into ‘him’. Rick was come into view that too.

You first met Lose one\'s temper Parfitt at the Butlin’s leave of absence camp in Minehead in 1965, when Status Quo were live there. Do you still call up that day well?

It was honourableness twenty-ninth of May. I walked into the camp and at bottom two minutes I’d met Array.

He was in a rank with these two birds, combination. They were called The Highlights. He used to camp extend up, but in those years everybody did. He watched positively sound-check, and told me next that he knew then go off at a tangent he wanted in. So do something had some drive.

What was justness young Rick like?

He had top-hole great quality inasmuch as bolster wanted him to like command.

The first gig he was with us was at righteousness Welcome Inn in Eltham, topmost he borrowed the clothes Frantic got married in – green-and-yellow striped blazer, pink shirt flourishing white trousers. But he hadn’t learned the songs, so powder unplugged and mimed all nocturnal. The others wanted to obtain rid of him, but Comical said: “No, I like him too much.”

When Pictures Of Matchstick Men reached No.7 in greatness UK you were pop stars.

Was it all champagne at an earlier time screaming girls?

Nope. I thought conj at the time that we have a hit, the aggregate will be fine. But set your mind at rest woke up the following dawn and the only difference was you’d sold a few registers. And if you thought birth struggle of getting there was hard, hanging on to ingenuity was even harder.

Pictures Of Matchstick Men is now revered orangutan a classic of the colourful era.

Were certain ‘influences’ cherished work when you were script it?

Drug-wise? No. I don’t uniform know what the song planned. And I still don’t know.

Really?

It just sounded good at probity time. And I never menacing that sound would come revisit.

But then all those life-span later, out come Oasis.

‘Quoasis’, in that some put it.

Yeah. Ha ha. Ain’t it new?

By the turn of rendering seventies, the ‘real’ Quo abstruse emerged.

That transition that they supposed we could never do – Quo are goin’ ’eavy!

Famously, paying attention had that eureka moment like that which you heard The Doors’ Roadhouse Blues.

Rick and I were put over Bielefeld, in Germany, at that place called the X Mace.

We watched this girl jaunt a guy dancing, and magnanimity way they moved to Roadhouse Blues was just phenomenal. Like this that song is where justness Quo twelve-bar boogie shuffle came from. That was us: rinky dinky dink…

Most fans view 1972’s Piledriver as the first decisive Quo album.

Would you agree?

Yeah. We started to double-track high-mindedness guitars. That made the straits bigger. The cover was smashing funny one, though – exceptional cartoon of a gorilla comicalness a bomb. What’s that got to do with a piledriver? Nothing at all. But resort to the time I thought: “Yeah!” Drugs, eh?

How did you come out the other heavy rock bands who were around at stroll time?

Ooh, Black Sabbath!

Fucking man’s stuff, innit? Not that gay Queen lot!

Did they take that piss out of you too?

Well, everybody thinks they’re better fondle Status Quo. They do. “Anyone can do that.” Fucking tossers! They liked us being spend time with so they could say they were better than us. However we were like that also.

You want to be bigger than everybody. And we confidential the most fabulous following.

Who were your famous friends in those days?

We always got on be a success with the Queen guys, countryside with Reg.

You mean Elton John?

When I first met him fair enough was Reg.

We’re not constitutional to call him that companionship more, apparently. But he was always Reggie to me. Additional Rick and Rod Stewart were such good muckers, always into the open air getting rat-arsed. That’s one gratuitous I miss about those epoch. We were all muckers, make happy happy for each other fasten be successful.

In the seventies your drugs innumerable choice were speed and weed.

They lie to young people nearby drugs – how terrible they make you feel.

The propaganda is, drugs make you touch great – at first. Side-splitting remember when we did Mystery Song [in 1976]. We formerly larboard Rick in the studio defer night, sitting on a seat, playing: da da da, cocktail da da… We came accent in the morning and said: ‘You all right?’ He said: ‘I ain’t been home yet!’ Still speeding.

Da da glass of something, da da da…

Was cocaine influence logical next step for you?

Here’s another lie: cannabis leads run to ground harder drugs. What led rot to cocaine was the spirits. Once you’re full of liquor you’re Jack the Lad. “Go on, then, give us probity coke!” I was frightened worldly drugs, but I became shipshape and bristol fashion coke addict for some hang on.

I get really annoyed in the way that people talk about the ‘rock’n’roll lifestyle’. No, we’re indulged. It’s arsehole behaviour, but it’s allowable because you’re making money supply people.

For a long time glory band was a tight-knit entity. So tight, in fact, defer on early-seventies tours you would get together in a caravanserai room to watch porn.

That was in Deutschland.

There were girls outside the hotel, going: “Shag, Englishmen?” But we were occupied inside, having a ‘polish’. Unrestrained shouldn’t keep telling that book. I’m more ashamed of organize the older I get.

What discharge you think it was roam changed your relationship with Rick?

Everything changes when we grow share out and we get married accept have children.

When we’re lush and in a band it’s us against the world. Authenticate the money comes in existing it’s: “That bloke’s got ultra than me.” And off moneyed goes. It was around lxxvii, after Rockin’ All Over Greatness World, that Rick started bare push himself forward. He thought to me: “I’m fed muddle up with being number two.” Comical told him: “Don’t do that.” He was my friend, swell person I loved, and crystalclear was soiling that.

Did he compel to the same way about you?

Probably.

I was being a c**t and Rick was being well-ordered c**t. That’s when he humbling I began to drift spurofthemoment. I dare say that’s instance with all of those exemplar rock partnerships, as it were. And then various people injured into Rick’s ego. He was trying to live this replicate that people had convinced him was who he should rectify.

With the Rick I beloved and knew, there wasn’t unnecessary male ego. He had monumental ego, but it wasn’t masculine at all.

On July 13, 1985, at one minute past twelve noon, Quo opened Live Aid critical remark Rockin’ All Over The World. There were 72,000 people soul Wembley Stadium, and close take back two billion watching around rendering world.

Did you realise formerly how big this was open to be?

Oh no. You’ve got to give Bob Geldof sovereign due. He got everybody persist do it. When he recognizance us, I said: “Look, Cork, we’re not getting along, we’re not rehearsed, we’ll sound prize a sack of shit.” Significant said: “It doesn’t matter systematic fuck what you sound come out, you’re the ones!” Subsequently Berserk found out he said dignity same thing to The Who, to everybody.

The funny flattering was, everybody was jockeying turn on the waterworks to open. But when miracle felt the vibe coming nippy that audience, I thought: “Oh, hang on, I get it!” It was the most delighted gig.

Did jagged think, as most people blunt, that Queen stole the show?

They were the donkey’s knob wind day.

Everyone said: “Jesus, they’re on it.” But they would be, they’d been out touring.

Who were the other artists meander you mixed with backstage force Live Aid?

Near the end castigate the show, I was period at a table with Pioneer, and as Geldof was not smooth to get everyone up make it to the big finale the beam went out and the diet collapsed.

I did go at this time up on stage, but Hilarious didn’t want to. It was embarrassing. So I stayed owing to far back as I could. I always got on border right with Bowie, though. Lose one\'s train of thought mysterious image he had, wander was not the man subside was. He was just calligraphic nice guy.

Freddie Mercury?

Something I pick up from those straight Southmost London boys: “Them poofs muddle wimps.” Fucking hell, there’s top-hole mistake.

As everyone was decamping out of Live Aid, Freddie bent me over a torpid, in a half-nelson, held devastate down and I couldn’t declare. Fuck, he was strong.

Was take anyone you didn’t like?

I muse on getting the hump with Declan – Elvis Costello. I said: “Alright?” And he looked mock me like: “I can’t smooth talk to you, I’m a bureaucrat musician.” C**t.

Get over ask over, son. I’m over it. You’re up your own bottom, aren’t you? Rick and I every time said let’s not be need that.

Alan Lancaster left Quo any minute now after Live Aid. John Coghlan had already departed, in 1981. Then in 2013 you station Rick reunited with them like that which the classic ‘Frantic Four’ Quo line-up toured again.

Quo fans were ecstatic, you less so.

An understatement. I could feel clever sense of euphoria in ethics audience, but it was wind classic thing: what can paying attention hear that I can’t? Every now the only thing that was in time that I was playing off was Rick’s tempo. In John and Alan’s exculpating, they weren’t working like Aggregation and I worked for middling long after they left.

What advantage came out of the reunion?

Bugger all, other than the fans were satisfied.

Not a healing cancel out relationships?

No.

Because it’s now be as tall as back to the way on the trot was before. Alan got truly insulting with me one age on the phone, exactly orang-utan he used to be. For this reason I cut him off. It’s finished. It seems like I’m cold in that respect, however I’m done.

And John Coghlan?

I’ve got other issues with John, soar it’s probably not his failing.

On the tour, we below par to use click tracks, cranium John kept saying the emit was putting him out funding time. Are you reading delay one correctly? It’s the metronome that’s putting you out pale time? Hello!

Are you sad development how that turned out?

I was elated to get back cop Alan Lancaster.

He was position guy I met when Beside oneself was eleven, and it was great when he stayed interview me for a couple understanding months before the tour. Amazement had a laugh going move around South London together, looking distill the old places. What amazement shouldn’t have done is finale play together again, because Become angry and I had come thus much further forward.

Do days go by shanks`s pony by when you don’t conclude of Rick?

I knew Rick long than I knew my parents.

I have a strange recall. It’s not way back divulge the past, it’s there disclose front of me. So present are times when I glance at see a picture in ill-defined mind: there’s Rick.

Did you intelligent talk to him about what had gone wrong between you?

Later on he’d say to me: “Why don’t we get classify like we used to?” “I don’t know, Rick.

Not these days. It’s fucking two in birth morning.” “Well I want anticipate talk about it now.” “No, Rick. It’ll be drunken malarkey, we won’t remember in distinction morning.” I just think they got to him with focus “You’ll always be number two” routine. You could sow put off seed of doubt with Pack.

You can with anybody.

In June 2016, following a Quo start in Turkey, Rick suffered a- heart attack, and you beholdered him being revived. Can cheer up describe what happened?

He was lifeless. We were all standing concerning as they dragged him scarper the bed and he bounced off the floor.

They try every fucking trick in magnanimity book, and I thought: “Why are they doing that ploy him?” It was fucking horrible.

Did anything change between you charge him after that?

When I went to see him, as disproportionate as his boys said unquestionable was fine, no he wasn’t.

He was completely different. Sand was talking to me variety though we were back effect 1984 or something. I judge he realised that he indubitably wasn’t going to live by reason of long as me because sharptasting kept having serious problems get used to his heart. But that was something we used to witticism about – who would fall first.

Andrew [Bown] used stumble upon say that Francis Rossi would die with a joint trauma his hand and Rick Parfitt would die in a Mandrax factory. It sounds morbid, nevertheless that’s how we were. Take precedence then, on Christmas Eve, Mad got the call: “Rick’s dead.”

Had you prepared for this?

We knew Rick was going to give in, but the reality of consumption was such a shock.

Crazed heard Rick’s voice in adhesive ear: “See, Frame,” – blooper always called me Frame – “at least I didn’t lay down one's life on a show day.” Existing I laughed. I thought, drift would be Rick. He knew if he’d died on smart show day we’d have abstruse to cancel.

And we’re besides ‘show business’ – we don’t cancel.

How has this affected jagged on a deeper level?

After appease died, I was asked: “Did you cry?” No, I didn’t. But I did one stygian when I was on nobleness tour bus. I played distinction original version of that at a bargain price a fuss of Rick’s All The Reasons [from the Piledriver album].

Stash away wrote lovely little songs. All The Reasons is fucking marvellous. And just for a secondbest I thought: “There he is” – there’s the bloke Rabid loved.

Did you think, in grandeur days after Rick’s death focus Quo was finished without him?

I wasn’t necessarily going to bring on.

I didn’t know what I was going to do.

Would he have kept the fleet going if you’d died first?

Yes. We both knew that. Sole of the things that reticent Quo going in the inauspicious years was: “Fucking chancers, righteousness same old shit, they won’t last long.” Oh really?

Incredulity were going to fight. Prestige same when we split smash Coghlan and Lancaster: “No useful without those two.” Really?

The equal is being said now.

I’ve concoct the comments: “Oh, he obligated to fucking stop it now. He’ll be no good without Rick.” Okay, maybe those people lookout right.

But what they’ve pressure is make me go: “I’ll show you.” I thank those people that said I can’t do it without Rick, tetchy as Rick and I thanked all the people that articulate we couldn’t do it insolvent Lancaster and Coghlan. Because at the start, we did, and secondly, doubtless I’m going to. And Frantic have done already.

With few of the gigs we’ve insincere in the last two length of existence, I’ve gone: “Fuck, it’s decode than sex.” In the terminal analysis, it’s still Status Quo.

Are Quo underrated?

I can’t say that.

And Mad really don’t know. Some end it’s fairly simple. I pay attention to to some of our albums and think: “Jeez, that’s dreadful.” I listen to other albums and think: “Fuck me, that’s a magical moment.” Some recurrent see Status Quo as blest. I don’t quite see well-to-do that way.

Like any second 1 band, it had some awful moments and some shit. Goodness only band I never axiom do any shit was Primacy Beatles, and maybe the Eagles.

There are so many classic Quo songs: Caroline, Down Down, Rain… Which are you proudest of?

There are songs you’ve written mention the years that you compel people to love, and there’s a handful where I don’t give a shit whether bolster like them or not, on account of I love them so some.

Marguerita Time is one. All We Really Wanna Do [from Rock ’Til You Drop, 1991] is another, and Tongue Tied [from In Search Of Influence Fourth Chord, 2007].

Do you collect you’ll know when it’s offend to knock it on illustriousness head?

There’s something in me – and I don’t mean that morbidly – that thinks ground can’t I just sit revolve and wait for death?

Ground not just potter about perch grow old gracefully? But exploitation I get enthused. I’m ready forward to getting back instruct playing with the guys on the contrary in the summer.

And before renounce, your autobiography.

I won’t read Not for a year, strict least.

I’m sure there anecdotal things in the book put off I shouldn’t say.

Looking back, ball you have any regrets?

I don’t know. I’ve just done justness best I can. I’ve antiquated selfish, as we all curb. We’re human.

And do you determine about how you would approximating to be perceived?

No.

That’s very much ego. I’m just natty basic dickhead, and a maneuver insecure. I hope that cohorts would think I was trim reasonable bloke, not a revolting fucker. That’s about all Mad could ask for.
