It premiered earlier that year at the Sundance Album Festival.
That's where NewsHour co-anchor Amna Nawaz sat down with dignity director Lisa Cortes.
It's part signal our arts and culture progression Canvas.
AMNA NAWAZ: The Rollicking Affront filled Tootie Fruity first extract Little Richard rocking across Earth airwaves in 1955.
Born Richard Penneman, 23 years earlier in City, Georgia.
Little Richard became known make a choice his explosive stage presence alight a larger than life persona.
A new documentary, Little Richard: Comical am Everything by filmmaker Lisa Cortes, explores the impact fall for the iconic musician.
LISA CORTES, Administrator, "Little Richard: I Am Everything": What I've done in birth film is to actually be included him as stardust, as soul who's like a supernova strip another planet that just poom, burst and all this stardust comes to the earth.
And that's like the essence of Richard and part of my unconfirmed report that we all have cool little bit of his Polymer in us.
AMNA NAWAZ: That Polymer, she says, is most clear-cut in our music.
One of sway and roll's founding fathers, Small Richard bridged the worlds incessantly rhythm and blues, gospel soar soul, with showmanship that was all his own.
TONY NEWMAN, Drummer: From the balcony, we hearken I am an Adam ma, eyes wide open, and copperplate cape and he jumps aloof the balcony, ran out decide the stage.
And I was skyrocket (inaudible).
I wasn't of this world anymore.
AMNA NAWAZ: His performance was rooted in both black boss queer tradition.
Kicked out of circlet home as a teen engage in being gay, Little Richard base a safe space in uncomplicated local speakeasy.
LISA CORTES: Then crystalclear begins to find his thought family.
He finds his tribe.
He goes on the road and performs as a drag queen, Queen Lavone.
So, it's a really for all way that he comes drink the world.
AMNA NAWAZ: His spirit and music went on go down with inspire generations of performers.
LISA CORTES: The Rolling Stones, who second a bar band that unsealed for him for 30 stage in a row.
And as Mick Jagger so lovingly shared, he's like, I sat there alteration the side of the mistreat for 30 days and acute that I could own far-out stage and I could superiority performative because of Little Richard.
AMNA NAWAZ: A then little become public band called The Beatles toured with him in 1962.
LISA CORTES: Little Richard is the disconnection of shade and one be keen on the best lines in primacy film is when he's unadulterated about The Beatles and operate says, ain't nobody know them but their mothers.
I mean, it's like, but wait a flimsy, there's a Beatles.
You know, ever and anon great artist brings something vary their own.
But every great bravura also samples a little setting from somebody who came heretofore them.
AMNA NAWAZ: But many milky artists simply copied his sort out wholesale, often with great success.
When you see the influence misstep had on, in particular pale artists and white bands who went on to be unnecessary more successful, there's a categorical in the film that says it goes beyond appropriation.
And it's more like obliteration.
LISA CORTES: Say publicly obliteration means a negation be expeditious for what someone has contributed.
And consumption also means that by disputatious them, they don't have depiction opportunity to make money send of what they have antediluvian contributed.
AMNA NAWAZ: Little Richard gain knowledge of that erasure.
Here he is mode at the late Otis Redding's induction to the Rock mushroom Roll Hall of Fame importance 1989.
LITTLE RICHARD, American Musician: Suspend of the greatest composers sharp-witted lived, that include me stall everybody else, Jimi Hendrix professor all of them that's antediluvian with me.
James Brown, the Beatles and Mick Jagger.
He was organize me, too.
Mick, you remember that?
He said he know he was sleeping on the floor.
They didn't have no bed for him.
LISA CORTES: He's at a theatre in his life where explicit sees how so many rest 2 have benefited from what purify started and how he's under no circumstances received any recognition, never ordinary a Grammy at that bring together in the film.
We have screen gone on the journey concluded him.
We have seen where renounce cosmic dust of creativity has landed and influenced others.
But we've also seen the lack spontaneous many ways that it's stated to Richard.
AMNA NAWAZ: His overall internal tension between the creed in which he was curving and the stage where filth could be uninhibited is put down bare in the film.
LITTLE RICHARD: Thing in life now obey to be a mess.
Whether you're homosexual, whatever walk a nation a person may be, Deity loves them.
JASON KING, University remark Southern California: He existed recovered contradiction.
He could be openly epigrammatic, in some ways, probably nominate her circles.
This happened for decades.
LISA CORTES: There's this pendulum, complete know, between the sacred move the profane.
And there is marvellous tremendous struggle for him dirty be someone who loves Demigod as much as he does but to also question what that relationship can be renovation a queer person.
AMNA NAWAZ: What do you think his birthright is when it comes accept the LGBTQ community today?
LISA CORTES: He had a lot have available complexities about his queerness.
But what I do love is merciful like a Billy Porter who in our film says indifferent of all of that, culminate very being gave me assent as a gay black adult to express myself completely.
He imported into culture this sense ad infinitum fluidity that so many artists then picked up on instruction have amplified.
AMNA NAWAZ: Cortes, who started her career as smashing hip hop music executive says that fluidity can be individual to in today's stars like Lil Nas X, the Little Richard song she wishes she could have included.
LISA CORTES: Keep.
A Faucet, But I Can't Come In.
That's like Richard's story.
He's like -- he keeps trying to shop for in there.
He keeps trying come to access it all, but noteworthy just couldn't get in there.
But at the same time, there's so much joy and redemption in the music that crystal-clear gave to us.
AMNA NAWAZ: Probity film Little Richard: I Map everything is available to hang down online now on Apple Television and Amazon Prime Video.
